Benefits of Language Learning in Quarantines

مرحبا يا أعزّ الطلاب

 أرحب بكم كالعادة من الباحة وراء البيت حيث الأولاد الصغار قد دمّروا كلا من النظام والترتيب. أختا زوجتي الإثنتان أرسلونا بنتيهن ليلعبوا مع العفريت خلال ما بنت خالته الأكبر وأخوه يدرسون في الداخل. أحسّ التباعد الإجتماعي يتدهور أمام عينيّ. هل تعيشون بفوضى مثل هذا أم لا؟

Hello, my dearest tulaab,

I greet you, as is my habit, from the back yard, where the little children have destroyed both order and organization. My wife's two sisters have both sent their girls to play here with Everett while his older cousin and brother study inside. I can sense the social distancing collapsing before my eyes. Are you all living in chaos like this or not?

كنت أفكّر طوال هذا الحجز الصحيّ على تأثيراتها السلبية: كيف أدرّس لغة دون الإتصال وجه لوجه مع طلاب؟ كيف يمكنني أن أقيّم بتقدمكم بلا قدرة الأستماع ولا تكلّم؟ وهل أنتم ستعرفون أنّ نجاحكم بالعربية مهمّ لي إذا لم أستطع أن أعرض لكم ذلك في دروسي؟ ولكن تعبت من هذه الأسئلة وبدأت أفكّر في نواحي تعلّم اللغات في البيوت بدل المدراس

I have been thinking this whole quarantine about its negative effects: how do I teach a language without face to face contact? How can I assess your progress without the ability to hear or speak with you? Can you know that your success in Arabic is important to me if I cannot show it in my lessons? But I got tired of these questions and started to think of the positive aspects of learning languages in your homes, as opposed to schools.

أولاً فكّروا في الأشياء المادية التي تحيطكم عندما تتعلمون في المدرسة. أليست هي نفس الأشياء كل يوم؟ نتكلّم عن القلم واللوح والكرسي والشباك. أحيانا أعرض لكم فيديو أو أرسم شيء سخيف على اللوح. لكن هنا في بيوتكم ترون حولكم أشياء لا نقول أسماءهم دائما. ماذا يسمى الشيء على يمينك؟ على يسارك؟ ماذا يفعل وماذا تفعل به؟ أريد أن أساعدكم كي تصفوا حياتكم اليومية بلغة ثانية وخارج المدرسة ذلك يحتوى على كثير لا نتكلّم عنه في الصف

Firstly, think about the material things that surround you when you learn in school. Aren't they the same things every day? We talk about the pen, the board, the chair, and the window. Sometimes I'll show you a video or draw something silly on the board. But here in your houses, you see around you things that we don't always know the names of. What is the thing called on your right? On your left? What does it do, and what do you do with it? I want to help you describe your daily lives in another language, and outside school that includes much that we don't talk about in class.

ثانيا هذه الفترة الغريبة ستغيّر تماما أفكارنا عن المجتمع وقيمة المؤسسات فيها مثل المدرسة. هنا في الحجز الصحيّ السؤال الكبير يوجهني كما أنا متأكد أنّه يوجهكم: ما هي أهمية المدرسة؟ لماذا نظل كل هذه الساعات الطويلة على هذا الأيام الجميل في الربيع هناك؟ أنا أؤمن بكل إيمان في أهمية التعّلم ولكن عليه أن يكن مركّز وعلى كل طالب أن يركّز تعلمه. فلذك  أسألكم لما يكون لكم الوقت لتفكير: كيف تريد أن تستخدم العربية لو لم تفتح المدرسة لبقية السنة؟ لأربع سنين؟ لطول حياتك؟ بطبع لا أريد إغلاق المدراس ليوم واحد بالمزيد لكن التفكير على هذه الأسئلة سيفيدكم إن شاء الله

Secondly, this strange period will completely change our ideas about society and the worth of its institutions, including the school. Here in quarantine, the great question faces me as I'm sure it faces you: what is the importance of school? Why do we stay all these long hours on beautiful spring days there? I believe totally in the importance of education, but it has to be focused and each student must focus their own. So I ask you while we have this time to think: how would you want to use Arabic if school didn't open for the rest of the year? For four years? For the rest of your life? Of course I don't want the schools closed for even one more day, but inshallah thinking on these questions will benefit you. 

تركت الأولاد لساعة كاملة والآن أسمعهم يصرخون في الخارج. أتمنى لكم يوم أكثر من يومي إرتاحا ولا تقلقوا أكثر من اللازم على واجباتكم. أشتاق لكلّكم!

I've left the children for a full hour and now they're screaming outside. I wish you a day more relaxing than mine and do not worry too much about your homework. I miss you all!
